About Large Figures
These figures are examples of some of the large figures I have carved over the years. They are carved from laminated, kiln-dried basswood. I have and can carve these figures from logs of several species of wood, however with logs there is drying time, splits, and cracks to contend with. While I have carved mostly Indians of this size, I can and would be open to designing any figure you may have in mind. These large figures were once very popular as shop advertisements at a time in history when many citizens were unable to read. They were used much in the same way as barber poles were, to draw attention to the goods or services offered in a business establishment. While the days of widespread illiteracy are long gone, the love of nostalgia has led to a resurgence in the popularity of these figures, often called "cigar store Indians". Nowadays many collectors are making use of these figures as dcor to lend an air of rustic charm to their home or business. If you are interested in a figure similar to the ones shown on this page, or if you want something entirely different, contact me. I can work up a design for your approval, sculpt a smaller version either in clay or wood, and create a figure that will enhance the look and feel of your home or business. These figures will also make a nice heirloom to pass on to your children and grandchildren. Each figure I do is a hand- carved original thus ensuring that no one will ever have an exact duplicate of the one I do for you. Greg
