This carving is my representation of a Blackfoot warrior. The Blackfoot were a nomadic, buffalo hunting people, who occupied the region of present day northern Montana and southern Alberta in Canada. They were the largest of the northwestern Plains Indians. It is generally thought they got their name from their custom of painting their moccasins black. They were widely feared by early trappers for their aggressiveness in defending their hunting grounds. By carving my "cigar store" or "wooden" Indians in a realistic type representation of various tribes, I hope to lend an air of dignity and authenticity to the subjects of this traditional woodcarving artform.
