Shields
These are just a few examples of the Native American shields I have carved. These are a relatively new addition to my woodcarving offerings, yet it is fast becoming one of my favorite types of carving to do. I enjoy being able to use both my love and knowledge of Native American culture and a little artistic license at the same time to create these shields.

The shields I carve range in size from 6 inches to 24 inches in diameter. They are carved from northern basswood and are painted with oil paints over stain. I use a unique style of painting which allows the wood grain to show through while adding enough color to enhance the carving without being overpowering. After painting I apply several coats of clear finish which protects and gives the carving years of beauty with little to no maintenance.
